Sidney Poitier Documentary in the Works at Apple with Oprah Winfrey as Executive Producer

Apple Studios is filming a documentary about the Hollywood icon Sidney Poitier, who died at his Beverly Hills home on January 6 at age 94.

According to Deadline, media mogul Oprah Winfrey is an executive producer on the project. Reginald Hudlin will direct the film about the Oscar-winning actor.

The documentary had been in the making and in production for over a year. Described as an in-depth look into the life of Poitier, the first black man to win an Academy Award for Best Actor for the 1963 film Lilies of the Field.

The film, an Apple Original Films release, also includes his family’s participation.

Oprah Winfrey will produce through her Harpo Productions and Network Entertainment.

Sidney Poitier is credited with helping open doors for other minority artists after his appearance in Hollywood classics such as In the Heat of the Night, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? and to gentleman with love.
