More Than Just MCU’s Hawkeye: Watch Five of Jeremy Renner’s Best Movies Here

Most people are familiar with actor Jeremy Renner‘s work thanks to Marvel movies. But Renner has been proving his mettle for a long time. From playing serious, rougher roles as a soldier, journalist, to physicist and even mayor, the actor has tried his best to be as versatile as possible. For those of you who only know him through his stint as MCU superhero and Avenger Hawkeye, here’s a chance to explore more of the artist’s body of work.

Dahmer

One of his earlier works that attracted audiences was the 2002 release Dahmer. The biographical, fictionalized version of the “origins” story of America’s notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, the film sailed through for a large part because of a powerful, compelling and belly-curling performance by Jeremy Renner, whose silence was just as ominous as his on-screen actions. The chemistry he shared with Bruce Davison, who played his father in the feature film, brought Dahmer’s more human side to life, and what may have helped him become the dangerous entity he later became.

The hurt locker

Considered by many to be his breakthrough role, Jeremy Renner played the role of Sergeant William James in the Kathryn Bigelow thriller. The film centers around the war in Iraq and focuses on the psychological and emotional impact that such an ongoing battle can have on soldiers. Nominated for nine categories at the Oscars, The Hurt Locker is a great example of one of those films where every part of the filmmaking machine eventually comes together in harmony. And, in a sense, it’s also that “complete movie” that gives you a range of emotions to experience within a limited span of time. From superbly crafted action sequences to believable performances, The Hurt Locker is something you wouldn’t want to miss.

The Hurt Locker will be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.

American crowds

While Jeremy Renner isn’t the lead in this dark comedy based on FBI Abscam from the late 70s and 80s, he played a convincing supporting role in the form of Mayor Carmine Polito. However, the show stealers here are usually the main protagonists – Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence. Excellent camera work from Linus Sandgren makes American Hustle much more dynamic and fun to watch.

American Hustle is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

Kill the Messenger

Produced by Jeremy Renner and based on the book Dark Alliance by investigative journalist Gary Webb, this 2014 release, supervised by Michael Cuesta, is a powerful thriller-drama that shines a spotlight on the obstacles reporters face when they decide to write a story about major players, in this case possibly the CIA. A fantastic central and grounded performance by Renner makes this a must see. The film also stars Andy Garcia, Tim Blake Nelson, Michael Sheen and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Kill the Messenger will be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.

Arrival

Arguably one of the best-made films on this list, acclaimed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve’s science fiction drama was poetry in motion. With Amy Adams delivering her best acting performance, and ably supported by Jeremy Renner’s physicist Ian Donnelly, Arrival was an intriguing masterpiece about life on Earth and how we see ourselves and others in the bigger picture.

Arrival you can watch on Netflix.
