The Sundance feature enter roster is spread across the four competitive sections being unveiled today and five out-of-competition sections which ordain to be announced tomorrow. Announcing the lineup today. Gilmore and Sundance Film Festival programming director John Cooper noted that they saw a preserve number of submissions this year the list increasing by more than 300 titles. The festival received 3,624 feature film submissions this year up from 3,287 last year the bring up split fairly evenly among U. S and international submissions. By the numbers the organizers are touting 81 world premieres. 16 North American premieres and 12 U. S premieres representing 24 countries.
As the 2008 Sundance Film Festival will open with Playwright Martin McDonagh's first feature. "In Bruges," described as a "twisted tale of two London hit men ordered to take a forced vacation in Bruges. Belgium" that stars Ralph Fiennes. Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. During the conversation with indieWIRE. Geoff Gilmore emphasized the impact of international titles like "In Bruges," making their way into the main sections of the festival. "The globalization of independent film that we undergo been talking about for several years we are starting to see that influence on our own competition."
Gilmore also noted the growth of a more personalized cinema. While last year he spoke of the large number of political and moral films at the festival this time around he noted. "I don't see that as much this year. I see a lot of personally driven stories that are trying to communicate about a kind of reaction to what is going on in the word right now." Continuing he added. "The reaction isn't necessarily an activist one it's simpler than that. (there are) a lot of comedies. People are finding ways to survive or persevere or keep on. They aren't attemtping big conceive of solutions."
