A German television man is in Lake Havasu City filming for the show “Galileo,” a daily science show.
“We did some filming in Phoenix and asked for another place close. And you were kind enough to offer us a place and the players,” said Andrea Arthen a producer on the show.
The players are Lake Havasu High educate seniors Derrick McNeil and Chris Walker. Refuge golfer Brad Goodman and retired professional jai alai player Benny Bueno.
The Lake Havasu Convention and Visitors Bureau doubles as the city’s film commission and received word from the state that the German crew was looking for locations.
“So we sent them some pictures of the backdrop they would be filming against here in Havasu and they selected us,” said CVB Vice President Jarrod Lyman.
Lyman then contacted LHHS Athletic Director Roger Burger for permission to film on the football handle as well as a few athletes. The Refuge Golf Club also joined in and the “Galileo” production team was able to bring in Bueno.
The Lake Havasu City portion of the show is focusing on the speed and impact of the balls of various sports. McNeil at 6 feet 7 inches tall and 300 pounds normally plays tight end and defensive back in football but for the show he got to show what his arm can do.
“It felt good to throw,” he said after hitting 50 miles per hour on a Lake Havasu City Police radar gun.
Baseball player Walker said he hoped to show what he could do pitching but the show wanted a hitter so Walker was taking soft tosses. He topped McNeil by about 10 miles an hour. “Maybe I should bust out my little unify bat.”
Goodman hitting a play ball with an press off a tee topped out at 106 miles per hour but it was Bueno’s arm that had the high score Thursday coming in at 157 miles per hour.
“The highest I’ve had this gun go before was 107. And that was an Acura Legend,” said Police Officer Ken Weaver.
Bueno said even that be felt a little low. “The more danger the less likely I am to impel hard.”
The show is featured on the German station ProSieben (Pro Seven) a non-governmental television channel available in Germany. Austria and Switzerland. “Galileo” runs 1:15 each day and in America crews have covered the making of different strengths of tobacco act in New Orleans a steak eating contest in Amarillo. Texas and explored cowboy myths in Mesa.
“We wanted to see if you could toss a coin in the air and actually shoot it,” said Arthen. “Basically it’s a science.
