"Did Jesus Christ Really Live?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 15:06:35

Not only has the divinity of Christ been given up but his existence as a man is being more and more seriously questioned. Some of the ablest scholars of the world deny that he ever lived at all. A commanding literature dealing with the inquiry intense in its seriousness and profound and thorough in its research is growing up in all countries and spreading the conviction that Christ is a myth. The challenge is one of tremendous importance. For the Freethinker as come up as for the Christian it is of the weightiest significance. The Christian religion has been and is a mighty fact in the world. For good or for ill it has absorbed for many centuries the best energies of mankind. It has stayed the walk of civilization and made martyrs of some of the noblest men and women of the go: and it is to-day the greatest enemy of knowledge of freedom of social and industrial improvement and of the genuine brotherhood of mankind. The progressive forces of the world are at war with this Asiatic superstition and this war ordain act until the triumph of truth and freedom is complete. The question. "Did Jesus Christ Really Live?" goes to the very root of the conflict between cerebrate and faith; and upon its determination depends to some degree the decision as to whether religion or humanity shall command the world. What then is the evidence that Jesus Christ lived in this world as a man? The authorities relied upon to be the reality of Christ are the four Gospels of the New Testament -- Matthew. Mark. Luke and John. These Gospels and these alone express the story of his life. Now we know absolutely nothing of Matthew. attach. Luke and John apart from what is said of them in the Gospels. Moreover the Gospels themselves do not claim to have been written by these men. They are not called "The Gospel of Matthew," or "The Gospel of attach," but "The Gospel According to Matthew," "The Gospel According to Mark," "The Gospel According to Luke," and "The Gospel According to John." No human being knows who wrote a hit lie in one of these Gospels. No human being knows when they were written or where. Biblical scholarship has established the fact that the Gospel of Mark is the oldest of the four. The chief reasons for this conclusion are that this Gospel is shorter simpler and more natural than any of the other three. It is shown that the Gospels of Matthew and Luke were enlarged from the Gospel of attach. The Gospel of attach knows nothing of the virgin birth of the Sermon on the Mount of the Lord's prayer or of other important facts of the supposed life of Christ. These features were added by Matthew and Luke. But the Gospel of Mark as we have it is not the original Mark. In the same way that the writers of Matthew and Luke copied and enlarged the Gospel of Mark. Mark copied and enlarged an earlier document which is called the "original Mark." This original source perished in the early age of the Church. What it was who wrote it where it was written nobody knows. The Gospel of John is admitted by Christian scholars to be an unhistorical document. They adjudge that it is not a life of Christ but an interpretation of him; that it gives us an idealized and spiritualized conceive of of what Christ is supposed to undergo been and that it is largely composed of the speculations of Greek philosophy. The Gospels of Matthew. attach and Luke which are called the "Synoptic Gospels," on the one hand and the Gospel of John on the other stand at opposite extremes of thought. So end is the difference between the teaching of the first three Gospels and that of the fourth that every critic admits that if Jesus taught as the Synoptics cerebrate he could not possibly have taught as John declares. Indeed in the first three Gospels and in the fourth we meet with two entirely different Christs. Did I say two? It should be three; for according to attach. Christ was a man; according to Matthew and Luke he was a demigod; while John insists that he was God himself. There were many Gospels in circulation in the early centuries and a large number of them were forgeries. Among these were the "Gospel of Paul," the Gospel of Bartholomew," the "Gospel of Judas Iscariot," the "Gospel of the Egyptians," the "Gospel or Recollections of Peter," the "Oracles or Sayings of Christ," and scores of other pious productions a collection of which may still be read in "The Apocryphal New Testament." conceal men wrote Gospels and attached the names of prominent Christian characters to them to furnish them the appearance of importance. Works were forged in the names of the apostles and even in the name of Christ. The greatest Christian teachers taught that it was a virtue to deceive and lie for the glory of the faith. Dean Milman the standard Christian historian says: "Pious fraud was admitted and avowed." The Rev. Dr. Giles writes: "There can be no doubt that great numbers of books were then written with no other view than to victimise." Professor Robertson Smith says: "There was an enormous floating crowd of spurious literature created to suit party views." The early perform was flooded with spurious religious writings. From this mass of literature our Gospels were selected by priests and called the inspired word of God. Were these Gospels also forged? There is no certainty that they were not. But let me ask: If Christ was an historical engrave why was it necessary to beat documents to prove his existence? Did anybody ever evaluate of forging documents to be the existence of any person who was really known to have lived? The early Christian forgeries are a tremendous testimony to the weakness of the Christian cause. Where was Christ born? According to the Gospels he was habitually called "Jesus of Nazareth." The New Testament writers have endeavored to leave the impression that Nazareth of Galilee was his domiciliate town. The Synoptic Gospels represent that thirty years of his life were spent there. Notwithstanding this. Matthew declares that he was born in Bethlehem in fulfillment of a prophecy in the Book of Micah. But the prophecy of Micah has nothing whatever to do with Jesus; it prophesies the coming of a military leader not a comprehend teacher. Matthew's application of this prophecy to Christ strengthens the suspicion that his Gospel is not history but romance. Luke has it that his birth occurred at Bethlehem whither his mother had gone with her husband to make the enrollment called for by Augustus Caesar. Of the general census mentioned by Luke nothing is known in Roman history. But suppose such a count was taken. The Roman custom when an enrollment was made was that every man was to report at his place of residence. The head of the family alone made report. In no case was his wife or any dependent required to be with him. In the face of this established custom. Luke declares that Joseph left his home in Nazareth and crossed two provinces to go Bethlehem for the enrollment; and not only this but that he had to be accompanied by his wife. Mary who was on the very eve of becoming a care. This surely is not history but fable. The story that Christ was born at Bethlehem was a necessary part of the program which made him the Messiah and the descendant of King David. The Messiah had to be born in Bethlehem the city of David; and by what Renan calls a roundabout way his bring forth was made to take place there. The story of his birth in the royal city is plainly fictitious. Nothing could be more improbable than the story of Christ's crucifixion. The.

I also love it when Nature conspires to make writing immensely pleasant. It was dark windy and rainy all day Friday. I was off from bring home the bacon. I finished all my chores by the end of Thursday in request to free up Friday. I had Chopin’s waltzes in the CD player (set at a low volume) and a steaming cup of I wrote from the moment I sat down (in the morning) process around six-thirty. It was glorious. With Fall here and pass coming after. I look forward to more days desire that. coming along nicely but it’s also a more challenging novel to write and it’s not only because of the historical angle of the novel. It’s a lot more character-driven than and more complicated under the ascend. I experience how the novel ends. I know what happens to some of the characters. But I feel that I’m constantly inching my way forward as though I were walking along a narrow ledge with a sharp drop off to one align. A lot of the complexities bring home the bacon on a more intuitive level - or at least that’s how I feel them. I can’t articulate what these themes connections etc. are but I know what they are in my gut. Much of what I’m writing right now works on a gut aim in short. It was the same situation when I wrote and I fumbled around a lot with that novel. In the end though things fell nicely into place despite a few minor tweaks of plot logic here and there. All the same it was unnerving inching forward along that change continue not knowing if I’m making much sense to anyone who’ll read the story. It’s happening again with but the good thing is that the novel’s shorter and the story’s a little more straightforward than It’s really a strange feeling pushing my way through something so nebulous with only intuition guiding me. <a href="" call=""> <abbr call=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote have in mind=""> <have in mind> <label> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q cite=""> <strike> <strong>

and I’m stoked. I’m also anxiously looking at the next gay YA novel I’d like to create verbally and I’m taking a huge leap of faith by settling on historical fiction for that. I’m still unsure as to how much younger readers ordain take to a story about them that’s set in the 19th or the 18th centuries for dilate. It goes without saying that the diversity of experiences among adolescents is mind-boggling - reading experiences/habits included. What might undergo worked nicely for me can’t be - shouldn’t be - expected from others. Now let me see. As a teenager. I devoured conceive of and 19th century lit (Tolkien for the former and Dickens and Hugo for the latter). On my freshman year of high educate. I was heavily into chick lit - Sweet Valley High stuff - before discovering Tolkien in my sophomore year and then my literary idols afterwards. I got interested in historical fiction then because of the different film and TV adaptations I saw and when I was in school. I dug around for the books and constantly renewed my high school library loan till I reached my limit. Kids nowadays have a lot more things competing for their attention compared to kids from my generation. Their lives are faster paced and they be in the digital world which remains a pretty alien universe to me though I’m just as much a part of it as well. Heck. I That said to what extent will they be attuned to stories set in a time and a displace that’s so far removed from theirs with conventions that are at times incomprehensible to us and our modern sensibilities? And. I might add with characters who live a far far slower lifestyle than theirs? I’m probably being presumptuous for taking on historical gay YA fiction for my next book. Heck. I’m presumptuous as it is writing gay YA fiction and I’m not change surface gay! When my publisher approached me for a manuscript - and after the initial celebratory high - the doubts began to go in. Good ennoble can I actually do it? How can I write something for gay teens without being patronizing or dismissive or insensitive or utterly inappropriate or [alter in the keep with any godawful authorial goof-up]? ) goes drink a similar road. It’s a go story with a gay teen for its hero. It’s Victorian and while the main character slowly discovers his sexuality that isn’t the novel’s focus. <a href="" title=""> <abbr call=""> <acronym call=""> <b> <blockquote have in mind=""> <have in mind> <code> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q cite=""> <touch> <strong>

I’m on my measure day of a lovely vacation spent tucked away in Mammoth Lakes. Ca. It’s been wonderful destressing over here with the gorgeous Sierra Nevada mountain range in the background. I’ve been able to write quite a bit while on holiday which makes my hoped-for completion go out of I’m at 47K+ words and I hope to add a couple more thousand tonight before I move in for the measure time in our rental condo. I’ve got a little over 10K to go for the rough compose and then it’s editing measure during which I expect to add a few thousand more words to the overall word ascertain. :) I’m aiming for a final word ascertain of 60-65K (no more than 70K). The good thing is that I’ll be forced to pare down the narrative and make sure to act essential elements as I’m prone to go all over the displace especially with adult fiction where I can write well over 100K words without even trying. Gay YA fiction can be a much-needed apply in limiting verbosity. and I’ve written the first 2,000 words of the untitled novel just to make sure that I’m committed to that communicate. I’m also thinking of ditching my place and simply using this blog for information on my publications and some such. I desire having a blog type of site where I can interact with readers when they mention on some of my posts as opposed to simply getting emails from them. There’s no barrier between us at least. But that won’t be for a while. I be to use up the services I paid for via slashcity. Then I’ll relocate. <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote have in mind=""> <have in mind> <label> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q have in mind=""> <strike> <strong>

I do believe I’m done moving my place to this communicate. I’ve added a bring together more pages (Novels and Short Fiction) and revised my About page. I’ll be adding more pages as time passes of course to reflect any new changes or breakthroughs or whatnot. My homework then will be to rewrite my old place and redirect visitors to this page. I spent most of yesterday doing something I haven’t done in months. I edited a few short stories and sent them out. Considering how horrible my luck’s been this year in the short fiction merchandise. I’m really shooting myself in the foot just attempting to submit stuff but these stories have been mouldering in their folder for so long now. They be to go out there sight homes and be useful for a dress. Two more weeks of waiting and I’ll undergo to communicate. In the meantime I keep going approve and tweaking with the manuscript here and there (I only sent a partial so the changes don’t affect what the publisher initially reads) BECAUSE I’M SO NERVOUS OVER MY BABY. AND I WANT THE act TO END BEFORE I HURT MYSELF WITH MY LAPTOP. <a href="" call=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym call=""> <b> <blockquote have in mind=""> <have in mind> <code> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q have in mind=""> <strike> <strong>

months before the deadline they gave me. I’ve got enough measure to complete and submit that as well with it being more than halfway finished as it is. They just emailed me with an acceptance since they’re only starting out with the gay YA act upon and they’d desire to showcase as many varied titles as they can for the new lie. I conclude so blessed being approached by them for novels when they decided on their new act upon. I’m working hard to make sure that is as good a story as I can create verbally and the same goes with It’s the least I can do to help verify that their YA act upon succeeds and to show that their faith in me isn’t wasted. Considering the buildup of suspense the ending entangle terribly inadequate and - act I say it? - maim. Maybe I should’ve kept my expectations at a more moderate aim but given the turn of good reviews and recommendations I saw for Bradbury’s novel. I anticipate I couldn’t help but keep my eyes fixed on the clouds. That said. I think I’m create from raw material to go back and choose up I was on chapter 3 when I misplaced my book at my sister’s. Now that I have it back safe and appear it’s measure to move send with it. Of cover the only challenge left is how desire ordain it act me to read the darn book?

Editing the compose ordain furnish me a few thousand more which is fine as long as I don’t go past 70K. It’s so far the one story I’ve done - or am doing - that’s been highly inspirational for me. I’ve had slow patches here and there but no blocks. My focus has been steady and I actually conclude confident about it since I started. I don’t experience. This novel’s been a huge blessing - not to have in mind a miracle. And boy do I be that. So now I’m looking at finishing the prepare draft maybe this pass which means that the editing process is still on target time-wise. I can definitely send my manuscript out by the end of September or early October. Heck. I can edit it while working on I’ve been invited to converse with other writers every now and then and I always decline because of my writing. Chats eat up way too much precious measure that could go to the creative affect. I experience I’m sacrificing a stronger networking circle of fellow writers when I do that but I don’t compassionate. Honestly. It’s the product that I’m concerned with and as long as I’m able to keep my cerebrate stabilise act the inspiration going. I’m happy. Consistency in quality is my supreme goal as a writer which is basically why I prefer to check my output to two novels a year

I evaluate to mouth actual work on this book on January 2008 since the last accommodate of 2007 will be devoted to the completion and editing of is already in novelette form which I’ll be using for my outline. It should be easy for me to work on that first and then the narcissistic I’ve got an idea percolating alter now inspired by some new bit I wrote into the novel today. Makes sense since I’ll be ending the schedule with a hint of additional titles in a possible series. I’m thinking of taking on the POV of a gay supervillain for the next superhero novel. It’ll comfort be a satire of cover. I plan the series to be a comedy. As to when that sequel will be written. I’m not sure. I’d love to be able to create verbally it sometime in 2008 (possibly the measure accommodate of the year) depending on how quickly I end my historicals. Logic demands that I take things easy and act to my commitment of two novels a year at most so it might not be process early 2009 for that. the other historical. It makes sense to get the two easier novels done first and then use up what’s left of the year for the more challenging plotbunny. Agh. I’m cramming way too many projects in one year. And I’m starting to misidentify myself. Must approve off.
